Crime Prevention Matches

We all make mistakes, but for many of us, we had someone who helped us learn and grow from them. Unfortunately, this is not the reality for many of the youth we serve as too often, a singular mistake snowballs into a sense that they are a lost cause.  Research proves that this does not have to be the reality for our youth, and in fact, with a caring adult mentor, they learn how to lead lives of independence as contributing community members. The Prevention program focuses on youth (ages 10 to 18) who have had contact with the juvenile system. The purpose is to connect each youth to a volunteer who can be a positive and strong mentor by focusing on one reality: relationships matter.

HOW IT WORKS

​

  • A one-to-one relationship between a mentor and a youth (ages 10-18 years) who has had contact with the juvenile system and are at high risk of  recidivism

  • Youth have case-management support from a KSBBBS Coach to ask, "How did I get here, where am I now, and how do I get to where I want to go in my future?"  Goals are established that focus on educational motivation, workforce development, and more.

  • Our KSBBBS Coach actively supports the mentor, providing a listening ear, guidance and direction when needed throughout the match to ensure safety, quality and working towards goals.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A one-year commitment to the relationship

  • A commitment to meet at least two times a month for as long as it takes to do a usual activity (grabbing a cup of coffee, eating a burger, watching a movie, making a meal together, etc)

*Basic Volunteer Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old.

  • Minimum 1-year commitment.

  • Access to vehicle and proof of vehicle insurance.

  • Communicate with case manager on a regular basis and continued training as needed.

  • Follow ground rules.
