Become a Mentor

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Big. We have hundreds of youth across the state of Kansas waiting for a mentor just like you. Please consider attending a noncommittal info session to learn more about how our program works and why we ask for a one-year commitment (see "Steps to Become a Big" below).

 

In the infosession, you will learn about our various match options: Community-Based, Site-Based, Plus Match, and Crime Prevention. Please contact us at info@kansasbigs.org if you have any questions or if you would like to request an on-site presentation at your workplace.

Our mentors are just everyday people who live out a known reality:  relationships matter.  A few hours a month can make a world of difference for a youth who comes to understand that your investment of time in them means that there is someone outside of their home who believes they are worthwhile and possess potential. You can be a critical part of their journey by filling out an online inquiry form.

Big Need

Of the kids we serve:

​

  • 85% of them live at or below poverty level. Of those kids in Kansas, 1 in 4 will not walk across the stage and get their high school diploma. Over 20% of the youth we serve actually have a total combined household income of LESS than $15K annually.

  • Over 80% of our youth come from single parent homes

  • Over 60% of our youth come from homes with issues with drug and/or alcohol abuse

  • Over 40% of our youth have either personally witnessed or experienced domestic violence

  • Nearly 1/3 of our youth have or have had at least one incarcerated parent

  • Over 25% of the youth we serve are also receiving services from DCF

Big Impact

Harris Interactive conducted an independent study, working with FORMER Littles who are now adults.  These results are why we do what we do:

  • 46% report a household income of OVER $75K

  • 78% vote in elections

  • 90% report that their mentor made them feel better about themselves

  • 76% learned right from wrong from their mentor

  • Over half said that their mentor kept them from dropping out of high school

  1. Complete a Volunteer Interest Form/Application online.*

  2. Complete Volunteer Paperwork

  3. We conduct background checks and check your references.

  4. Attend an in-person interview and home visit with a staff member.

  5. Learn about a few waiting Littles whom we think would be a “best fit match” for you.  

  6. Meet your LITTLE!

*Basic Volunteer Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old.

  • Minimum 1-year commitment.

  • Access to vehicle and proof of vehicle insurance.

  • Communicate with case manager on a regular basis and continued training as needed.

  • Follow ground rules.
